100 landfill sites closed since recession began

According to the latest statistics from BDS Marketing Research, 100 landfill sites have closed since the recession began in 2008.

There are a number of different reasons for the closures of so many landfill sites, some have became too full and have been denied planning permission to extend while others have simply come to the end of their natural lives.

What is clear though is that the recession has played a key part in many of the closures and with more and more alternatives to landfill becoming available the closures may well continue.

The research went on to show that WRG continues to be the largest national landfill company with Biffa and Viridor coming second and third respectively. The top 3 companies represent over 40% of the landfill market and with Veolia, SITA and Cory completing the top 6; they represent almost 70% of the market.

With the ever rising costs of landfill tax and with more people becoming aware of the damage we’re doing to the planet, it’s more important than ever to ensure you’re doing all you can to reduce your waste. The construction industry currently throws away over £1.5bn worth of construction materials without ever being used, simply surplus to requirements. By using services such as Recipro, the sector can help dramatically to reduce waste removal costs as well as benefit the planet.
